Glasgow SECC, 29 November
Candida rated the Glasgow concert as "the best so far". And, reading the two accounts of the evening from Traceyanne Higgins and Christine Muirhead, it looks like she was right!
"Glasgow SECC, Nov 29th, front row: 9pm. Here at last after 4 months of feverish anticipation. I can hardly stand the excitement but also feeling apprehensive. They were so good at Finsbury Park - how can they top that? Suddenly, the lights go down and a cheer goes up as we hear the opening bars of The Fear. Deafening roars and screams as on struts Jarv. Strange that the stage is dark. That's because it isn't Jarv! The real one bounds on to the stage, we laugh at his cheek but feel a little annoyed at having been duped for a few seconds! All this lends a little humour to the song but, for me, takes away some of the drama. Next, straight into the joyful, crowd pleasing Babies. Not one I expected to hear live again but they still manage to make it sound fresh. We bounce up and down frantically. "You lot are a bit lively for a Sunday night, aren't you?" says Jarv. It's impossible not to be. The atmosphere is electric and Pulp really seem to be enjoying themselves. Jarv is smiling a lot and burbling away in between songs in his usual endearing manner. "I'm not Jesus", he sings, on Dishes, but I can't help thinking, as I watch some of the fans desperately reaching out to try and touch him, that he does have a messianic effect - at least for tonight.
For now though, we must be content with some pseudo sexual healing as Seductive Barry begins. This for me is one of the highlights of the current live set. It's swirling, sensuous, psychedelic sound mesmerizes me and for a few minutes I am transported to heaven! Oh yes! We're definitely 'sorted' by the time they start to play the uplifting, anthemic E's & Wizz, and again succeed in making an old song sound very now. This Is Hardcore, too, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just like it did the first time I heard it, and I lose myself in its almost unbearable misery. Predictably, we get Common People for an encore and we sing along and dance ourselves into a frenzy. Soon, though, euphoria is tinged with sadness as we hear the beginning of an almost unrecognizable Lou Reedesque Disco 2000, for we know that the show must come to an end soon. "This is the last song", says Jarv, "and it's called F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.". for the last time tonight the mosh pit goes mental! Well, I think to myself - a song about lust doesn't seem to be a bad way to end an evening of sensory perfection and I head for home well and truly satisfied - again! (Christine Muirhead)
"Hi Jarvis! Glasgow SECC was the best fun ever!!! It was so cool when you put my banner on your head & walked across the stage! Hope you liked it! Your look-a-like friend totally freaked me out! I'm still in shock, it was so cool. First gig, best gig ever, for me. I've converted my friend Katherine into a big fan now and she agrees with me that you are a sex god. OK so she didn't, but she likes you more than she did before. I made my Dad drive us down to Glasgow at 2.30pm. At 3.50pm we sat outside Hall 4 beside some other mental Pulp fans and sang Pulp songs. It was fun. Then we sang along to This Is Hardcore, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. & something else I can't remember, which you were practicing. When are you gonna be in Scotland again, cos I need more Jarvis intake and fast. You were Mr sexy gorgeous Jarvis. Steve was sexy & Mark was really cute. Candida was cool and Nick, well, Nick's got a nice arse. Not as nice as yours but still nice. Richard is a brill guitar player.
Thank you for being alive! You know what you're doing and you do it well. If only there were more people like you. Brilliant! I haven't stopped smiling ever since! THANK YOU!!! (Traceyanne Higgins)
