Hurricane Festival, 21 June
"After spending a few hours trying to get backstage passes, we finally realise that we will not be able to hang out with the stars...but the disappointment is gone as soon as Pulp take the main stage . They are fantastic. They play a lot from This Is Hardcore, plus Do You Remember The First Time, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., Sorted for E's & Wizz and Common People. Jarvis seemed rather pissed off the day before at Loreley, where he was rolling all over the monitors and smashing his his mic stand at the end. But here it looks like he is enjoying it. He does not even bother when there is a problem with his sandals, he just continues barefoot. To my surprise there are a lot of fans and the crowd reaction is really good. Thanks again!" "June 27th was one of the hottest days we had in Germany this summer. Money Mark was playing by the time we found the registration office; this woman handed us our green wrist ribbons and pointed us in the direction of the main entrance. After 20 minutes of pushing, apologizing and crawling through the crowd we stood in front Hospitality, next to the Main Stage - but we were refused admittance, not too politely either! Apparently we had the wrong ribbons. The certainty of seeing Pulp again and the pleasantly painful excitement gradually outgrew the disappointment. We walked around nervously, in desperate search of shade, sun lotion and the right ribbons. A couple of beers later I had the glorious idea to try the office again - I was ready to face the enemy! "You better check the list again", I said; I had nothing to lose, and it was only when I pulled out a Pulp tour card that I had wisely brought along that she began to take us a little more seriously. So I did get a blue ribbon after all... I felt the odd Pulp mood slowly taking control over me...I'd just worked out this amazing concept for a film when the stage was ready - for Hurricane - Will you please welcome...PUUULLP!!! They started off with Do You Remember..., and I was mesmerized. Steve looked too hot for words (as usual) and Mark's hair was too red to believe. I really missed Russell badly...Russell and his mad ways. In between I'm A Man, A Little Soul, Party Hard, TV Movie, I kept running back and forth screaming "I got the words! I really got them now!". I waited for The Fear, but they didn't play it. Common People was rather an impressive farewell. The crowd squashed and squeezed me badly - so what? The rest of the night was pleasant and beautiful too. I put on my walkman to listen to The Fear on repeat - what a fantastic day it had been. They really made me feel mighty real.( Pia Kolling)
