24 August: Carling Weekend, Temple Newsam Estate, Leeds
Leeds
ended up being a bit of a mud bath, and the smell of piss will linger in my nose
for too long, but it was fantastic. Better than Reading, a slightly different
set that worked better and the crowd were totally up for it. Pulp played at
dusk, so it was light when they started but by the time it got to Hardcore it
was night. After Pulp we all waded over to the dance tent to be blown away by
Aphex Twin..
So a good night was had by all. Left the Strokes, whose dressing rooms were next to Pulp's, discussing guitar technique with Richard Hawley. Could lead to some interesting new directions for everyone involved....

I'm giving joint first place to Pulp and the Hives for being the most entertaining bands of the whole weekend. The lighting for Sunrise was beautiful. I was sitting near the back in the middle and the whole audience below were lit up in this rich yellow / orange glow. It sent shivers down the spine. Quite spectacular. (Andrea)
Just to say Saturday night's Pulp performance at Leeds was fantastic - the band definitely showed the rest of 'em how it was done. I saw Jarvis watching the Polyphonic Spree in the carling tent but wasn't sure coz my glasses were steamed up - didn't want to stare for too long coz it's rude!!! (Jackie)
After
a mixed day, which included terrible performances from Mercury
Rev and Dandy Warhols and some fantastic sets from White Stripes, Weezer and Von
Bondies, it was time for Pulp.
They play the opening to FEELINGCALLEDLOVE and the whole crowd erupt and
from then I knew it was going to be a classic performance.
Highlights of the set included
Live Bed Show and Sunrise, but I am still not too sure about the re-mix version
of Common People. The festival crowd
loved it, but I think Pulp should either drop it from their set or play the
original version. Jarvis was on top form
with his unique bland of banter. Tonight he took the piss out of Slipknot and
Toploader (You go Jarvis!!!) and this sent the crowd into a frenzy of laughter.
A few people around me kept shouting out for Two Little Boys but it was
obvious to all that he would never consider playing it.
It was a fantastic set from Pulp and it looked like they enjoyed it as
much as the crowd did. From what I
heard, this was the best Pulp gig of the Carling Weekend and this was my
favourite gig of Leeds 2002. Pity
they weren't headlining. Thanks
Pulp for making my weekend complete. (Wiggy)
