I waited 5 years for Pulp to come to Newcastle and, my God, it was no disappointment. After the comical dancing of Fat Truckers we were all in good spirits and Jarvis' entrance was welcomed by massive cheers. The set was new album-heavy, so we got new favourites 'Bad Cover Version' and 'Birds In Your Garden', both performed fantastically. 'Live Bed Show' was fantastic, especially the 8 minute extended version they played. 'Dishes' came as a welcome surprise, and the encore of 'Babies' was the best version I've yet heard. There wasn't enough banter from the usually talkative Jarvis, which was a shame, as was the exclusion of 'Joyriders' and 'Wickerman', but I think everyone in attendance would agree that 'Undewear' more than compensated. All in all, a fantastic triumph. Come back soon, Pulp - The Toon needs you!!! (Paul Regan)
Newcastle was, of course, great. It was very
funny, Mark seemed to be amused by something most of the way through and Jarvis
had all sorts of people desperate to touch his bare feet! There were two big
blokes at the front who were just as silly as the girls, holding out their
hands,
grabbing him. I think he found it hysterical too. Even though he sang 'I am not
Jesus', I think they think he is. Anyway, a very good atmosphere but no
Wickerman, so although I really enjoyed Newcastle, to me Sheffield was more
special, which isn't surprising really. (Milena)
After seeing Pulp live for the first time at
the City Hall in Newcastle last Saturday, I can assure you that
I will be present at any future gigs of theirs - they were absolutely fantastic.
I arrived at 7.15 (it said on the ticket it was to start at 7.30), and was
surprised at the lack of people in the audience. It eventually started at 8pm,
and the theatre wasn't even half-full, and I could see why when the awful
support band 'The Fat Truckers' started playing. (Oi! Watch it. - FT Ed)
Would someone explain to me how some men shouting 'Teenage Daughter' over and
over again can be classed as good music? When the Fat Truckers said they were
about to play their last song, there was an audible sound of relief, which made
me feel rather sorry for them. At 9pm, the theatre filled up, and Pulp came on
stage with a massive reaction from the crowd, all jumping to their feet. Every
song they played was fantastic, and the only bad thing was that the time went so
fast - I wished they could have carried on playing forever. Every song was
performed
with the same energy and amazingness as the last, and Jarvis's
performance was fantastic. I wish he could have talked more as he was very
funny, and a fantastic host, but there was a drunk guy behind me who kept
shouting at Pulp to stop talking and play another track - which, after many of
Jarvis's attempts to finish what he was saying, they did. 'Sorted for E's and
Wizz' and 'Underwear' had the whole crowd singing along, and the atmosphere was
amazing. At 15, I think I was the youngest one there, which is a bit of a shame
because younger people should appreciate this amazing music - the average age of
the audience member being about 35. Still, this was a fantastic and memorable
experience, and one which I shall not forget. (Sophie)
