September 22: Royal Festival Hall, London
Set List: The Heavy / Rod Of Iron / Branded / Oh My Child pt 1 (sung by Richard Hawley) / Pour Man / A Cheat
Not a Pulp performance, just Jarvis and Richard Hawley,
together with Jason and Ross from the Fat Truckers performing a short support set
at Lee Hazlewood's London concert. There were four
new songs, one of which was sung by Richard (pt 2 of Oh My Child will appear on
Richard's next record), followed by two Hazlewood covers -
Pour Man, from Love and Other Crimes, and A Cheat, the song Jarvis and Richard
covered for the Total Lee tribute album. The new songs were more electronic jams
than finished material, and probably won't be performed again.
Jarvis (bizarrely) began and ended the set with a quick karate demonstration.
nme.com review - The nme are taking great delight in calling this "Jarvis' first solo show..." - are they blind? It's hard to miss Richard Hawley even in a bad light, and the noise the two fat truckers were making made it pretty clear that Jarvis was anything but alone. Jarvis and Hawley have played together before, and various members of Pulp performed in different combinations in the past, so this really isn't anything to get excited about.
It takes a robust sense of humour to see the point of Jarvis Cocker's new band (They aren't his new band! Ed) with one-time Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley, an electroclash pastiche that does no credit to either. The synthesised drums buzz angrily, industrial guitars squall and spit, and Cocker's voice is so heavily distorted it is unrecognisable. They almost redeem themselves with a sleazily atmospheric take on Hazlewood's The Cheat featuring jangly guitar, but when Hazlewood later remarks, "That Jarvis Cocker is a gas, isn't he?" few in the audience are inclined to agree.
