Jarvis at Sherwood PinesHurrah! The first Forest Concert was a huge success and it didn't rain! Surprise of the night (year) was hearing Little Girl (with Blue Eyes) - I wonder what Pulp have up their sleeves for the rest of the tour?

Here's what you thought. It's interesting comparing your different perceptions of the night. Click here for lots of pics, and here for a whole page full.

Just had to let you know how brilliant Pulp were at Sherwood Pines last night (well, of course, they were brilliant - how could Jarvis and Co. ever be anything else?).  It was a lovely evening and a perfect setting for the gig in a clearing between a mass of pine trees. Thankfully the rain held off and we didn't have to resort to putting the black bin bags, which we had been sitting on earlier, over our heads for cover!  They began with "The Trees" (obviously - what other song could you possibly start with in the middle of a forest?!) and finished with a spectacular rendition of "Common People" (at the second attempt, anyway, Jarvis having messed up the first try, although his actual explanation of what he'd done wasn't quite so polite as mine!)
In between, we were treated to the most amazing performance, with all the obvious tracks from "We Love Life", interspersed with a spectacular "This is Hardcore", many popular tracks from "Different Class", (including my favourite - "Live Bed Show" - thanks Jarvis!), and going right back to "His 'n' Hers", we got to hear the wonderful "Babies" and "Joyriders".  But the surprises didn't stop there - they'd obviously decided that having gone back to 1992, they may as well go back a few more years and so I was utterly gobsmacked to find myself listening to "Little Girl With Blue Eyes", which I am ashamed to say I couldn't remember all the words to, although the group of girls behind me didn't seem to be having much trouble!
Jarvis, as always, was his usual droll and witty self, entertaining the audience with subjects as diverse as pork scratchings, Robin Hood, the sensual feel of cagoules, the World Cup, the possibility of getting splinters in his feet, his girlfriend's hen night and the suggestion that we might all like to remove our clothes and get back to nature, as it were!! (although he excused himself and the rest of the band from this, so that we wouldn't see their "bits" - the mind boggles!).

However, despite the two encores, it came to an end all too soon; as we reluctantly trailed off into the darkness of the forest to try and find our cars, with what seemed like a thousand Pulp tracks spinning around in my head, I couldn't wait for the next time that I could see  them live.  Whenever that might be, it won't be a moment too soon! I have to say that when i first got there I didn't have much hope for the show - maybe it was the eerie children's choir singing the Beach Boys and Bowie. It was pseudo Stephen King to me - stuck in the woods with children singing ...well it freaked me out.  the first band on sounded pretty good but i couldn't get past the eclectic costuming of the band and the Devo-esque arm movements. There was some guy in white playing a tambourine like he'd had lessons for years, he was pretty cool. Clinic came on next and they were absolutely brilliant. Then after Clinic left, I looked behind me and noticed a lot of people were there and my faith in the forest was restored. Pulp came out and started with The Trees, and Jarvis took off his parka and coat to the delight of the ladies and the boys. Someone threw a hamburger bun on stage and i thought that was really funny. It kinda soared past Jarvis' head... they played a lot of songs but i think the highlight of the evening was Sunrise and Sorted. At that point it was worth it to be crushed and drenched at the front. It was nice to see the other members of Pulp looking happy and Candida had an interesting scarf on her head. Jarvis took off his shoes/socks and Steve has a really lovely smile. I was extremely pleased with the concert, it was a good end to a good day of football and no rain. (Demi Kranikoglou)

Just like to say that the gig last night was incredible and i'll never forget it ever again. Jarvis's entrance onstage in his duffle coat and acoustic guitar sent shivers down my spine. Candida looked radiant as ever in her crimson bandana and Steve looked really cheerful. As for the music well, what can i say ??? Jarvis's spontaneous humour was very very funny especially when he commented on his girlfriends hen night and the weather kept fine as well. The Forestry Commission handled the event very well and was truly a night to remember. Thanx (Stuart Barrett)

Last night was fab. I had gone with low expectations, not really sure why. I wasn't very excited & wasn't sure what to expect. But it was amazing, one of the best ever. It had an outdoor feel & atmosphere, but was as intimate as a small hall. The sound was brilliant & Pulp played great & all looked happy. Jarvis was as wonderful as only Jarvis can be. A very different entrance, I almost missed him as he came on with the others, & in his parka with the hood up! He soon took it off, but sensibly kept it by in case of 'a cold snap later'. There wasn't, well not in the crowd, we got hotter & hotter & enjoyed it more & more. Jarvis later encouraged us to go naked if we wanted, get back to nature! There were so many high spots, F.E.E.L.I.N.G was excellent, & Live Bed Show & Bad Cover Version & Birds & Hardcore. And Jarvis kept us amused as usual with his chat. Sunrise was a highlight as ever, it sounded so good out there, except that you know it signals the end of the proper set. I felt really sad, but not for long. I finally achieved my Pulpy-lifetime ambition & got Jarvis' cigarette, thanks to my husband's long arms. By the way, he really enjoyed it & it was his best ever Pulp concert. Recovering from that, the encore amazed us all with Little Girl, about the last thing I expected. It was wonderful to hear them do it, as it's one of the songs I'd resigned myself to never hearing live. Followed by 2 other older classics, one of my faves Joyriders & the ever-brilliant Babies. Hold on tight to the rail or die!! And it was hard trying to clap hard without squashing the cig!! Then another encore, not quite sure what went on during Common People, but it ended up alright & sent us off happy to have had such a great concert. Looking forward to Thetford now with great delight & wishing I was going to others. Thanks Pulp & thanks Jarvis - you were magnificent! (Toni Sutton)

Given the nature of the venue, it was somewhat predictable although pleasurable, that 'TREES' should be played. This opened the concert in triumphant style and from this apt beginning, the masses enthused. It was, therefore, noticeable the Jarvis appeared slightly less interactive with the crowd than usual, especially as the latter were in such good form. Despite this, the concert lived up to its promise as being truly memorable with a fine set of songs, including the four staples - 'This is Hardcore', 'The Fear', 'F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E' and 'Live Bed Show' - which appear to have become (very pleasingly) indispensable at a Pulp concert for the time being. Sunrise' stimulated the excited mania the song deserves but unfortunately, also brought the concert to its initial close. Within minutes, however, the band were back on stage for the first encore comprising three songs. The first of these was worth the admission price alone - truly stunning to hear 'Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)' after such an absence in their live sets and moreover, played beautifully. A second encore consisting the timeless 'Something Changed' and a rousing rendition of 'Common People' (complete with very amusing abortive beginning), brought another truly great evening to its close. What an amazing experience! Arrived in Edwinstowe after a three and a half hour drive in time to watch the football with some ramblers we bumped into. Then a full afternoon of boozing in some very hospitable local public houses before heading off to the woods to find Pulp. A very long walk down a very long road, but beautiful scenery and of course the smell of nature all around us! At the venue, with our homemade Jarvis pendants swinging from our necks, we waited eagerly for Pulp to arrive onstage. From the minute I saw them come on stage to the minute my head hit the pillow back at the B + B I didn't stop jumping and singing and screaming. Apologies to the people standing near me who perhaps didn't appreciate my interpretation of Sunrise and Common People. There was loads of interaction between Jarvis and the crowd, with Jarvis the most relaxed and at ease I have ever seen. No hint of pre-wedding nerves there at all. He mentioned that his 'missus-to-be' was out on her hen night ~ does that mean that we were all in attendance at his stag do??? Can't wait to see them again at Reading. (Mary Long)

It was amazing, they all seemed really relaxed, especially Jarvis. The set was fantastic, I would never have dreamed I would get a chance to hear Little Girl (With Blue Eyes) - I was gobsmacked, and even a little choked, then to follow it with Joyriders - brilliant! (Bridget Booth)

Saturday was amazing, only the 2nd time I've seen Pulp, it was a remarkable setting for the gig with the pine trees and smell of the countryside all around. Managed to persuade a mate to come who lives reasonably close and knew where it was I imagine it was a nightmare to find though for others. More people there then I expected with a varied age range although most there were 30+. As ever i was embarrassing myself and mate by singing every song and was impressed myself and many others around me by knowing the words to 'little girl with blue eyes'. Would have loved to have seen My Legendary Girlfriend or Inside Susan though but Pulp would by there all day day if they did songs to please all. enough memories to keep me happy on the long train journey back to the north-east. As the night drew in there was an indescribable atmosphere. A truly memorable and unique experience was had by all. Even my mate who previously had not heard much Pulp was jumping around like a maniac by the time a strange version of Common People begun (not sure what happened with that) Can't wait for Leeds!
