London Wembley Arena, 18 November
"Pulp walked on to the chilling note of The Fear, to huge applause. Richard Hawley - very cool; Steve Mackey - sporting his whiter than white trainers; Mark Webber - shaking his hair; Candida Doyle smiling all the way to the keyboards; Nick Banks - sitting down very quickly, trying to avoid attention; and lastly Jarvis - but something strange happened during this song - there were TWO Jarvis'! As they walked across different parts of the stage they took turns singing the lines. At the end of the song the false Jarvis walked off stage, and I understood who it was - it was the "Stars In Their Eyes" contestant who pretended to be Cocker! Very scary indeed, the performance gave me the fear!
"The lighting was incredible, and was most effective during This Is Hardcore and Help The Aged, when smoke was released onto the stage, covering the group. Babies and Joyriders were the only treats we would get this evening from Pulp's past; after A Little Soul they performed the wonderful Underwear, which lacked Russell's searing violin, but was excellent anyway.
"Pulp ended the main set with Party Hard, which made the standing crowd pogo into madness, and towards the end of the song hundreds of pink balloons fell from the ceiling into the audience below, creating a real party! Pulp walked off with the crowd throwing balloons all around the arena. All that could be heard were sounds of popping balloons, and it wasn't long until they returned.
"This is Hardcore opened the encore and received rapturous applause. Glory Days followed and stopped midway for Common People, which upset me at first, but it turned into the best version ever - everyone who was seated stood up, everyone who was talking, started singing. It was the best Pulp show I had been to and I was about to leave when I noticed that the lights hadn't come on and there were still cheers from the crowd - suddenly, Pulp returned to the stage!!
"Jarvis started singing lines from Disco 2000, with Candida playing weird space age keyboard noises...the crowd were confused, but then suddenly Mark bashed out the riff to the real Disco 2000 and the crowd went crazy! By the end of the song, there were more cheers than for Common People! Then, they had to go, and ended on a beautiful Something Changed, leaving us all happy and spoiled...Thanks Pulp - I'll never forget this night. (Toby Langley)
