ARCHIVED NEWS: 1999 |
| Pulp did unsurprisingly poorly in the reviews of the year...just about managed to feature in the Music of the Millennium polls, but then those people have no taste - slightly better is the Times Metro Albums of the 90's, where they were mentioned several times, although only Different Class and This Is Hardcore were mentioned. Some people!!!!!! |
| DISCO 2000: What's really going on? OK! This is what's happening: Disco 2000 HAS NOT BEEN RE-RELEASED. All that happened is that it was made available to buy as opposed to remaining deleted. It will NOT be classed as a new release, which explains why the packaging & track listing are the same - that's because it's the same CD. So, should anyone wish to buy it or order it, they can. That is all. I know it's hard, but please don't immediately assume what the NME tells you is true...it will save you a lot of heartache in the long run. |
| JARVIS FOR MAYOR!!!! (?) Q Online is running a vote to find which London-based popstar would make the best mayor of that fair city. Well, there's no competition, is there??? The bad news is that a late surge in support for Liam Gallagher (orchestrated by one of his websites) has led to Jarvis being temporarily put into second place. I don't need to tell you that this would be a catastrophe, so please lend your support to future Mayor of London Jarvis Cocker and vote for him! The vote can be found on the homepage (no longer active ) |
| "Hopefully, too, we've seen the back of Pulp's Disco 2000, which is not the Greatest Living Englishman's finest moment, though it's still better than 99% of the swill that passes for classic pop" Julie Burchill, writing in The Guardian |
| NICK BANKS' UNCLE HONOURED
Spotted in
the Independent on Sunday last week: "The six unrecognized heroes of England's 1966
World Cup triumph are to be honoured as "icons of the millennium", senior
government sources say". Cool!!! Tony Banks (no relation), the former sports
minister, said, "This is great news - when France won the World Cup in 1998 the whole
team was given the Legion d'honneur. It is only right that we honour our heroes at
last".
JARVIS HEADS SOUTH FOR HOLS The same newspaper ran an article on the new popularity of seaside town Whitstable, in Kent. Jarvis, as well as minor celeb Ulrika Jonsson, have been spotted there recently. "A waitress commented, with a slightly bored air: 'Oh yes, we had Jarvis Cocker down here in the summer. He was sitting with a piece of string tied to his foot. He was pulling the string to make his leg move up and down'." Slightly more interesting was the article in the Guardian Weekend (Dec 11), in which Jarvis wrote a piece for a feature called "My Favourite Things". Entitled "The Rivers Porter and Don", Jarvis told of his teenage trip down the river Don, Sheffield's largest river-cum-sewer that runs through the city centre and on to Rotherham. If you'd like a copy, send me an A5 sae - there's a nice photo of Jarvis and a not-quite-so-nice one of the concrete banks of the river. |
333 CLUB Continuing their series of low key appearances, Steve and Jarvis accompanied glass harmonica player Alisdair Malloy for a twenty minute set at the 333 Club in London on Nov 31st. It wasn't advertised on purpose, so don't start shouting at me for not telling you. |
DJ DATES Jarvis and Steve DJ-ed in Barcelona on 10th December, at the Mond Club Sala Cibeles (Crcega 363, Barcelona) from 12.30 am until 3 am. (Thanks to Pulp Person Sandra Benet for the extra info re. prices). Not only that but they are also jetting off to Greece for two DJ dates: 17th Dec - The Camel Club, Athens, and on t he 18th, The Mylos Club, Thessaloniki. I am reliably informed that both of these dates were fun, and went really well, the celebrity DJ's had a good time although some of the records they played were met with some confusion, especially in Greece....full report in the next newsletter. |
| NEW SONGS!!!!!!! Just thought you'd like to know, I have in my hands a CDR of NINE new songs. Four some of you will have heard at the Venice / Edinburgh / Liss Ard sets, others include Darren and Got To Have Love. What can I say? It sure is good to hear them. Nice to hear Jarvis writing about Sheffield again, it reminds me of older Pulp. I have no more information about the songs regarding possible singles, so don't ask me! There are still six songs to be demo-ed. Soon as I know anything it'll go up here. And no, I can't tape them for anyone!!! |
| JARVIS JUDGES MUSIC OF THE MILLENNIUM The HMV / C4 / Classic FM Music Of The Millennium poll which has been taking place throughout the year concluded over the weekend when the greatest of the great were named. Jarvis sat on a panel of highly qualified judges to assess the chart positions arrived at from a year's worth of voting. Jarvis' choice as record of the millennium was "God Save The Queen", by The Sex Pistols. |
| BITS & PIECES Steve & Jarvis' proposed DJ-ing trip to New York has been cancelled...but they've been asked to play in Barcelona and Greece, so we'll keep you informed on that (see above)....Mark is back in New York for a month or so, so won't be at the November Little Stabs At Happiness...Unfortunately the proposed 'Little Stabs At Happiness In New York' experience that we said might happen this November very probably won't, so sorry if you've been looking forward to that. Finally, I don't know where these rumours come from but there seems to be one circulating about Pulp playing The Limelight Club in Belfast - they aren't! |
| JUST IN! Jarvis appeared with The All Seeing Eye at the Liverpool concert at the L2 on the 26th. |
| MELODY MAKER / NME For those of you without access to the music press (let's face it it's better that way), you will have missed a short article in the current MM, featuring an arran jumper clad Cocker talking about the new songs. Click here for the full text. And, not only that, but they have only just discovered the Polnareff tribute album, and not only that, but they seem to think that it's a new recording to be released on Nov 1st, when it's been out for about a month already! AND they spell his name wrong!!! Poulnareff indeed. Here is what you REALLY need to know - I have moved it up from much further down this list, where it has been for AGES.... |
CANDIDA VISITS CORONATION STREET! Been meaning to put this up for a while, for the few of us who don't subscribe to the Coronation Street magazine, here is Candida, pictured during a recent visit to 'The Street', where she was probably more excited than the cast! |
LEEDS & DUBLIN FILM FESTIVALS Mark has worked with the organisers of these annual festivals and come up with a programme for Dublin and Leeds. |
I can tell you that everyone found the Liss Ard experience very strange, but also very interesting. Mark is planning to move out there as soon as he can. They played in a tent to about 500 people and the rest of the time was taken up with walking, tree planting (Jarvis), and staring at the stars (the ones in the sky). |
| THE QUIET REVOLUTION: Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, 31.8.99
The concert is over...I think it's fair to say that Pulp triumphed, if only in a small fan club type way, in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall on Tuesday night. Reviews are already winging their way across the isdn lines and I'm sure there isn't much I can write that hasn't been said already. But for the benefit of those of you who don't belong to any of the Pulp mailing lists, click:

| ASI COLLABORATION
Jarvis' words can
be heard on the new ASI album "Pickled Eggs & Sherbert" (FFrr Records), out
now. If you scroll on down right to the bottom of this page you can read about the Jarvis
/ ASI / Tony Christie collaboration that began last year with "Walk Like A
Panther" - well this album contains the other songs Jarvis wrote for them, one being
another reworking of an old Tony Christie song, "Drive Safely Darling"; It's had
rave reviews but sadly FFrr aren't offering Pulp fans any kind of discount, unlike nice
Jeepster Records (above). Anything that combines Jarvis AND Tony Christie has to be worth
investigating, discount or no discount!
As if making records and being on stage with them at Reading and Leeds wasn't enough, Jarvis is also working on a web radio station type thing with them, which will run from the (rather fantastic) ASI site at www.theallseeingi.com. Will keep you posted on that. |
| HARRY SMITH PROJECT RETURNS TO NEW YORK The Harry Smith tribute concert that formed part of Nick Cave's Meltdown in London this July (right), looks set to be recreated in New York on the 11th & 12th of November at St. Anne's Church, Brooklyn. Performers already confirmed include Nick Cave, Beth Orton, and Thurston Moore. I know we hinted that Jarvis & Mark would be performing at this event, it has not yet been confirmed and almost certainly won't happen now. |
| MORE FILM SHOWS FROM MARK Mr Webber has also been asked to choose films for the Dublin & Leeds festivals. At the Dublin Fringe Festival on the weekend of 2nd & 3rd October there will hopefully be 6 programmes of international avant-garde films. In Leeds in mid-October there will be a brief introduction to American underground film. |
| DJ's STEVE & JARVIS Your favourite DJ's were in New York City in July doing their stuff at a posh media party. Top style mag Dazed & Confused held a bash - a Lava Party - at ultra fashionable advertising moguls Bartle Bogle Hegarty's offices at 7 W 22nd St. on Tuesday night - I am told that MC Marky Mark was also present, seeing as he was hanging out in the city for a couple of weeks. He was there working on his big museum project and also presented film programmes at Anthology Film Archives and during all night screening at the Exit Art Gallery. Later that month Steve & Jarvis made another disc spinning appearance at The Custard Factory in Birmingham. |
| ANCIENT HISTORY As usual the NME is years behind us, having only just this week reported on the Venice Biennale concert on the 10 June, the one we told you about the DAY before it took place.....once again Pulp People proves itself miles ahead of everyone else in the Pulp News stakes.... In fact I am contemplating a "Fact ? Fiction ? " section, a running commentary on what you read in the music press (by and large inaccurate or plain rubbish), where you will be able to find out if what you read has any basis in fact or not. Err, can I get sued for this? |
| Legendarily bad tv pop show The Word is enjoying a 'best of' run right now on UK screens, and on Saturday night made it worth sitting through all the rubbish by showing Pulp making their first live tv appearance, performing Lipgloss back in 1993. The only difference between then and now (apart from the lack of Russell) would seem to be Mark's amazing performing hair! Brilliant. |

| GLASTONBURY
Jarvis got into the
spirit of things by performing Whigfield's "Saturday Night", known to be one of
his favourite summer tunes, at a Keith Allen - organised backstage Karaoke at Glasto'.
Sadly I don't have a tape of this but I am getting my hands on some photographs...
JARVIS was a guest on Steve Wright's Saturday Show on Radio 2 on June 19 - those of you who tuned in will have heard Jarvis chatting about astrology, smoking, new songs... Wright also played ''Disco 2000' and 'Born To Cry'. Link to transcription available soon! It was a busy week for Jarvis; on Sunday 20 he took part in a spoken word extravaganza at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, again as part of Nick Cave's Meltdown (a fiver says next year it'll be "Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown").(Oh, ok, so it wasn't - maybe next year?) It is called "Sacred and Profane", and Jarvis read from work by 'Outsider Artists' featured in his TV series. Then on the 2nd July Jarvis is taking part in Hal Willner's Harry Smith Project with Nick Cave, Van Dyke Parks, Bryan Ferry, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Beth Orton and others, at The Royal Festival Hall, 7.30pm. The evening was intended to be a tribute to the "Anthology of American Folk Music" which was assembled by Harry Smith in the early 1960s. Jarvis doesn't like the record so he performed two of his own compositions ! One was a new Pulp song that was previewed at the Venice concert a month before, the second was "Conversation With A Cockroach", which Jarvis wrote especially for this event. Cocker was backed by the house band, and Mark Webber made a last minute appearence playing guitar on the Cockroach song. There is a chance that Jarvis will be working with Nick Cave soon on another project - I don't have any more details but it should be an interesting combination. He's also done a Jimmy Webb song with Alpha - should be good. |
DEATH IN VENICE? Pulp played at a private party for artist Gary Hume (a friend of Steve and Jarvis) at the Venice Biennale on Thursday, 10 June, at the Palazzio Pisani Moretta; sadly, as it was a private party, no uninvited guests were permitted, which meant that we were unable to invite any Italian Pulp People...I did try, honest, we just couldn't. Mark tells me that the 40 minute set would comprise half new, half old songs, and there would be a special guest, Dido from Tiger, playing Jarvis' omnichord. I have managed to get my hands on a tape of the concert (unfortunately my expenses did not stretch to a flight to Venice), which includes SIX untitled new songs, plus Sorted..., TV Movie, The Fear and This Is Hardcore. There were short reviews in The Guardian (15/6) and The Independent (12/6). I have to say that the new songs sound pretty fantastic! One is a monologue in the style of Sheffield Sex City (except not rude). |
RUSSELL SENIOR'S band VENINI will be releasing their first single on June 21st on Russ's Bikini label. It is called "Mon Camion" ("My Lorry" en Anglais), B side "St Tropez". They played Blow Up at The Wag Club, London Saturday 15th May, Sheffield The Boardwalk on June 10th and Glastonbury New Bands Stage on June 26th. We here at Pulp Towers went to see them at Blow Up, it sure was nice to see Russell on stage again, shades and all - they played a short, sharp set...see them if you can or contact: VENINI, PO Box 1471, Sheffield, S6 1UN. |
| "A LITTLE SOUL"
was up for an Ivor Novello Award
in the 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically' category, but did not win. The Awards ceremony
took place on May 27th at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London, and my spies tell me
that Cher, of all people, walked off with the award... PULP recorded a song for the sequel to Four Weddings And A Funeral, "Notting Hill". The song, "Born To Cry" will feature on the soundtrack with artists such as Al Green and Elvis Costello. For some mysterious reason though, the song isn't in the actual film - only on the soundtrack CD. At least we don't have to sit through Hugh Grant & Julia Roberts to hear it. |
CANDIDA did a short interview for the Sunday Telegraph about what it's like working in an all male environment, which appeared on April 17, with a nice photo (not the one illustrated here). If you want to read it, let me know and I'll put it up. |
| NICK co-presented footy programme "Teenage Fanclub" on Radio Five Live on Monday 22nd March. His co-presenter was Wendy Douglas, from Channel 4's Board Stupid, and I understand Mark Owen was there too. |
| PULP TV Pulp may well be coming to BBC2 for an evening of Pulpy entertainment! They are working on a 40 minute one-off show, but details are still rather vague so I won't be putting out any more info until more is confirmed. JARVIS' 'Outsider Artists' series was broadcast in February/March to great acclaim. There were features on it in the Sunday Times Magazine on16th January, and interviews with Jarvis in the Independent on Sunday (31/1) The Times (31/1), The Guardian (1/2), and new magazine Heat on the 8 Feb. It's fascinating stuff and was great to see Jarvis back on our screens. |
| TOP 40 NEWS
Jarvis
spent some time last year (1998) writing songs for Sheffield crooner Tony Christie and the All
Seeing I. Four tracks will be included on the new ASI album, out soon. It was a bit of a
Sheffield collaboration, Tony being from Conisbrough and all. The single, Walk Like A
Panther, was released on London Records on Jan 4 and entered the Top 40 at number 10 -
higher than any recent Pulp singles! Hope you caught them on ToTP (22 & 29 Jan),
Jarvis singing Tony's part on the 29th as Tony had gone back to Spain.
A single will be released from the album soon - more info as we get it. |
