Pulp were on the Jo Whiley Show on Dec 10. Different Class is at number 23 in Q's list of the 50 best albums of the last 15 years. "The most artful record of the era..." |
Pulp are playing Barcelona and
Dublin (tel 0870 243 4455 for tickets although I am informed it has
sold out already) in December - see tour dates (below) for more information.

Tickets are available from FNAC or by phone 0 820 821 200 (9am - 1pm, 2pm - 6pm) and cost roughly £15 each. The evening kicks off at 6.30pm. Click here to read reviews My spies tell me that P U L P letters, adorned with leaves, have started hitting the streets of London (in particular Kentish Town and Hammersmith) ... Pulp will be on Top of The Pops this Friday. They recorded both The Trees and Sunrise for the show, but I'm not sure right now if both will be shown... (15/10) (Later: looks like it was just The Trees...(22/10)) WEBCHAT Jarvis did a webchat with Radio 1 online after co-presenting the evening session on the 10th October. The chat kicked off at 10pm and lasted an hour. Transcript available as well as video NME are giving away a CD featuring "Party Hard" live at Paleo 24 July, with a small piece written by Candida, in the current issue. (04/10) |
| JOHN PEEL PARTY Pulp joined Billy Bragg, Nick Cave and New Order (via video) at a select 40th anniversary broadcasting party for top Radio 1 DJ John Peel, held in London on Monday night. The proceedings were compered by Marc Riley, and the Controller of Radio 1 kicked everything off with a eulogical (is that a word?) ramble about how ace John always has been / is / will be. Pulp performed last and kicked off with possibly one of the least likely cover versions of recent times, Peter Gunn, followed by Sorted, Help The Aged (dedicated to John) This Is Hardcore, and Sunrise. (26/09) The set was broadcast on John Peel's radio show on the 11th October. Pics! |
| VIDEO: The video for the single has been directed by an American guy called Phil Harder, whose website you can check out at http://harderfullerfilms.com The video was shot on Friday 17th August, in Wimbledon. (22/08) |

| Jarvis' extra - Pulp activities continue with a song for footie film Mike Basset England Manager. Jarvis recorded the track with ex-Pulp man Antony Genn and Primal Scream trumpeter Duncan Mackay. the soundtrack is released on September 24th, and also features songs by Primal Scream, Supergrass, Robbie Williams, Justine Frischmann, Richard Ashcroft.... (27/09) Apparently it's the very last song in the film - as the final credits are rolling...Check the compilations page of the discography for more info. |
| PULP'S FOURTH PEEL SESSION The last session Pulp did for Radio 1 DJ John Peel was in September 1994, and consisted of Underwear, Common People, and Pencil Skirt. The one before that was in February 1993 [Pink Glove, You're A Nightmare, Acrylic Afternoons] and the one before that was in November 1981 [Please Don't Worry, Wishful Thinking, Turkey Mambo Momma, Refuse To Be Blind]. Their fourth session was broadcast on 28 August. This time the songs were: Sunrise, Weeds, I Love Life, plus the brilliant spoken word song previously performed in Venice and Edinburgh known then as Return To Air, now called Duck Diving, that Jarvis found in a 1971 English Project Stage 1 text book...the whole thing was transcribed in issue 28 of Pulp People, Winter 1999. |

PRESS: This week's NME has a whole page about the album - the article doesn't really tell regular visitors to this site anything new but it's all very positive stuff (despite the mistakes) and there's great photo of Jarvis' van. Check the story on the site too. The Face reviews the Sunrise promo in the current issue thus: "Takes a while to get going, and shit, has Jarv still got The Fear? But slowly, surely, with some Wagnerian choralling in the background, Pulp wig out with the party hard baroque'n'roll they've long since claimed as their own....." (02/08) Worldpop featured a video interview with Jarvis Cocker yesterday, 20 September. The interview took place at cd:uk after their performance of Trees; the interview is in video format, but will also be transcribed for those who do not have access to real player. Excerpts of the interview will be shown on worldpop news on cd:uk this coming weekend. Click here for a worldpop review of the album. (21/10) Jarvis is interviewed in The Independent 16 October |

RICHARD
HAWLEY GOES SOLO
Richard Hawley, Pulp's regular extra guitarist on both studio & live material,
released his first solo record in April. 'Richard Hawley' is a
gentle seven track mini LP, vaguely reminiscent of 'It' re-recorded by,
say, Edwyn Collins and produced at Sun Studios. Very nice. The
first single, "Coming Home" is released on 16 July, backed
by two new studio tracks, one from the same session
as the mini LP plus a
new instrumental called "Cheap Spanish Whine". He
is currently in the middle of recording his first album proper for release
in the Autumn. (26/06)
As reported on the NME site, Jarvis is making a short documentary film about Richard which will hopefully be broadcast on BBC this summer, although that is yet to be confirmed. (04/09). Link: Richard's website |

NEW ALBUM PRODUCED BY SCOTT WALKER
Also involved with the album has been engineer Pete Walsh, who has worked with Scott since his 1984 Climate of the Hunter lp. Although Jarvis has not yet released a statement about Scott's involvement, we spoke to him in an exclusive interview with the group about the recording of the album in the current issue of Pulp People, the fan club newsletter. (13/03) Click on Scott for more information. There is also a Scott site called Walkerphiles that you might want to visit. |

It's so exciting! Two brilliant live shows, followed by a cover story. The world's media grind into action with the interview Pulp did a week or so ago in this week's NME, illustrated by some ace new photos from Perou. The interview, by Ted Kessler, portrays the group brilliantly - even though they don't actually say a lot about the new material - certainly less than in the interview in the fan club magazine - but you get a good impression of the new all natural Pulp. Sadly Mark wasn't able to make it due to other commitments but you get to read about Candida's Shaggy fetish, Nick's obsession with weeds, Jarvis' sporting activities, and Steve's fear of dancing. You can read the whole thing on nme.com The NME also give Homelands a great write up: "Pulp are magnificent...the prospect of being richly entertained by an intelligent, witty and glamorous collective... becomes hugely exciting" Yeay! Pulp have pretty much finished all the recording for their seventh album, and will be doing some final mixing and overdubbing in the studio next week; there's still plenty of time before the album's predicted autumn release date. Still to decide is the final track listing for the record as well as the artwork, and of course they will be thinking about what to release as a single. (16/03) Jarvis and Steve have been working with DJ Parrott on a remix of Sunrise, not sure what's going to happen to it though. (5/02) Pulp are also working on a song initially written two years ago for Marianne Faithfull, but which might appear on her next lp of [mostly] collaborations with other artists, including Beck, Dave Stewart, Evan Dando and Billy Corgan. The song is called 'Sliding Through Life On A Charm'. (13/03) |
| JARVIS RECORDS VOCALS FOR ALPHA Jarvis is featured on the new EP from Bristol based group Alpha. The song is a cover of Jimmy Webb's "This Is Where I Came In". The song was initially recorded in 1999, but has been sitting in Alpha's pending pile until now. The four track 'South' EP is out now on Melankolik (SADD12) (08/05) |
| DIFFERENT CLASS ARTWORK IN TOP 100 The 100 Best Record Covers of all time are the reason for the new Q Limited Edition Collectors Special, out now. The sleeves aren't listed in any order and were voted for only by the contributors to Q, it's possibly not the most accurate study ever. Record design guru Peter Saville comments that "Pulp have a remarkable understanding of contemporary culture...working with them was more like working for an art client". The cover art for Different Class was created by Mark Tappin and Seb Marling at Blue Source and is directly 'inspired' by an idea Jarvis saw in Nova magazine, with cutout figures of Marx and Lenin. |
| GLASTONBURY 2001 is going online. Yes, enjoy Glasto from the comfort of your own home as the festival goes online this year from the 22 - 24 June. You'll be able to sing along with the delights of Gorillaz, Basement Jaxx and Stereophonics doing exclusive shows, and if you stay awake thru that lot you can enjoy classic archive performances from PULP, Blur, Elastica, The Cure and loads more. The shows will be broadcast from 7 pm each night and there will be news update daily. Click on the link above for more info. |
| PRESS: DAILY TELEGRAPH WRONG AGAIN Anyone worried about the "Ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker..." picture caption in the DT magazine need not be concerned - this is just another example of their feeble journalism - ignore it. (09/05) There is also a positive article in the Saturday Times' 'Play' section: "The return of... Pulp is a breath of fresh air". (19/05) We knew that all along! |
| Jarvis on TV: Jarvis was one of the celebrities interviewed for "Are You Experienced" on C4 on Saturday 5 May; the programme was all about things you're supposed to have done by ages 20, 30, 40 and before death, and was clearly a direct copy of the 1994 "Do You Remember The First Time?" documentary. Jarvis was talking about virginity, bed wetting, and children. (07/05) |
| OBERHAUSEN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL (3 - 8 May). Mark is in Germany at the moment presenting "Floating Through Time", a retrospective of master filmmaker Larry Jordan, at the 47th OSFF. Jordan, who will also be present, is known for his animated engravings and unusual poetic live action films, sixteen of which will be shown on the 4 and 5 May at the Filmpalast Lichtburg, 10pm. At midnight on the 5th in the Festival Lounge Mark and Gregory Kurcewicz will present "The Somnambulists Retreat", 'an informal mix of music and film to take you into the night'. For more information on the festival check out the Oberhausen site (18/04) |
| mistake of the week: In the NME review of the Rough Trade 25th Anniversary party: "Jarvis and Russell Pulp's DJ set spans eras....." err - that was Steve, not Russell. Russell left Pulp four years ago, remember? (8/03) |
