ARCHIVED NEWS: 2002

LAST SINGLE April 15th (everywhere)

CD1: Bad Cover Version / Yesterday / Forever In My Dreams

CD2: Bad Cover Version (video version) / Disco 2000 (Nick Cave Version) / Sorted For E's & Wizz (Roisin Murphy version)

DVD: The video, plus behind the scenes footage from the shoot, and a gallery of 10 stills of the lookalikes.

According to a poll here on pulponline a few months ago, the songs you most wanted to see as the next single were Birds in Your Garden and Bad Cover Version. And for once, Pulp agreed! Bad Cover Version is the new single, out on April 15th.  It isn't a case of you lot actually picking the single, as the NME site seems to think (however lovely that would have been) - no, it was just a happy coincidence. Listen to Bad Cover Version here.

The video version has the 'voices' of the lookalikes instead of Jarvis.  The version of Yesterday is a remixed version of one they recorded initially with Chris Thomas. (13/02)

LATEST: As nme.com so rightly pointed out, one of these ideas is the Nick Cave (right) covering Disco 2000 one...Mr C  recorded a couple of versions of Pulp's 1996 smash hit, one of which will be mixed this week.  Perhaps this is a thankyou for Jarvis appearing in Nick's brilliant 'Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow' video last year. (06/02). Roisin Murphy of Moloko, who remixed F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. back in 1995 (see Promos page of discography), has had a go at Sorted for E's & Wizz with Fabian Antonio (13/02)

It is unlikely that the single will have a universal release - sorry; but the dvd will be a worldwide release so should be viewable everywhere. - NEWS JUST IN - It isn't! The dvd is not playable in the US or Canada unless you have a fancy player.... (07/05)

If you can't wait to hear Bad Cover Version, or you're frustrated cos no other radio stations seem to be playing it, the North-East's biggest Student radio station, Utopia FM, has added it to their A-list. The station can be found at www.utopiafm.net

VIDEO Jarvis directed the video for Bad Cover Version, which is an hilarious spoof of  the Band Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas?" record, but with lookalikes instead of the real thing. According to Nick, "It was good fun for a change, what with nearly 30 lookalikes from The Bee Gees to Kylie, and myself unrecognisable in beard and wig (Dick Witherspoon, record producer). During filming, all the lookalikes were addressed as who they looked like......Kylie sang like an angel, Keef and Noel put down some great axe, Brian May was triumphant at the end, Bowie was Bowie, Phil Collins and Macca got a great groove going, Missy Elliot and J-Lo were 'Street'. Elton kept 'powdering ' his nose..." The mind boggles. (03/02) We hope to be able to stream the video here on pulponline shortly - nme.com have had to take it down cos they weren't allowed! But I can assure you it will make you laugh out loud, the lookalikes are so spot on, clearly very talented people, barely discernable from their real counterparts as you can see from the pics we nicked from the NME, above! (13/02) The websites devoted to the real stars are also talking about the video - check out a Bowie one here.

The current Pulp People newsletter features a diary of the day from 'Gary Numan' (Chris Fielding) (above left). Send sae for a copy to PO Box 87, Sheffield, S11 8WJ.

There are  two versions of the video knocking about - a censored and an uncensored one. Basically the only difference is that a v sign given by the Liam lookalike has been pixilated out.

Here's a full list of the stars represented in the video: Sophie Ellis Bextor, Elton John, Robbie Williams, Liam Gallagher, Phil Collins, Kylie, David Bowie, Bjork, Bono, Missy Elliott, George Michael, J-Lo, Macca, Craig David, Tom Jones, Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain, Rod Stewart, Meat Loaf, Cher, J Kay, Jarvis, Mick Jagger, Gary Numan and Brian May

Nick joined Richard Hawley on Mark & Lard's Radio 1 show, coming to you from the (surely fictitious) Halon Menswear Music Prize, where Pulp won the important listeners' vote...

The film not only focuses on these bands but also other bands that were important to this scene such as Artery, 2.3 , the Extras, I'm so Hollow and the early Pulp

RUMOURS RUMOURS RUMOURS...The hotdog site assures us that Jarvis is "set for directorial debut"...the "limp-wristed pop star"  is all but confirmed to direct the screen adaptation of Harland Miller's rites of passage novel Slow Down Arthur, Stick To Thirty. We are told that "Cocker always wanted to direct the book but it seemed as though he'd been thwarted by Miramax snapping up the rights. Now it looks as though Jarvis' luck might be in as he's top of Miramax's wish list of directors".

5 months later and things are looking a bit more proper - check out this news story on the nme site (29/05) and (also from nme): "I'm hoping that, well, it's at a very early stage of development, but a friend of mine, Harland Miller, wrote a book called 'Slow Down Arthur, Stick To 30', which is about a  David Bowie impersonator in York in the early 80s. It's kind of about his formative years in York. He sold the rights for that to DNA, who are the people who made 'Trainspotting' and, er, I kind of am trying to pitch to direct that. But it's at a very early stage of development. I would really like to do it, especially since I came down here to study film and did actually finish my degree. Making the TV thing was keeping my hand in there, but I would love to make a feature film. Its whether they think I'm capable of making it and whether they let me do it the way I want to" (23/06)

Harland Miller was at the York Barbican concert on the 21st November and the Thetford Forest one in June, and was also a guest at Jarvis' recent wedding. (15/7)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANDIDA!

Pulp's keyboard player Candida Doyle celebrated her birthday on stage at Glasgow on the 25th, serenaded by the crowd & group and accepting a bottle of champagne by a half naked man! Anyone got any photos?

Right: Jarvis and Richard Hawley on stage at Leeds.

Jarvis' impersonation of Rolf Harris on ITV's Celebrity Stars in their Eyes trouncedJarvis with stick on beard and moustache the (admittedly feeble) opposition with his cover of the 1969 hit "Two Little Boys" last Saturday. Candida, who accompanied Jarvis to the studios and watched the performance, said he went down really well with the audience and the whole thing was top entertainment - must have been 'cos he won! "The funniest thing I've seen on TV for ages!!"  - Michael Kemp (19/08)

The tribute to Scott Piering concert that Pulp headlined back in April is to be broadcast on C4 on August 26th at 12.10am. Jarvis and Camille were married on Saturday 13 July in an idyllic village in northern France. It was a beautiful, romantic day, culminating in much drunken behaviour (yes you Nick Banks), spur of the moment guitar mayhem (Richard Hawley) and a quite frightening cover of Purple Haze (Jarvis & Hawley, right) on a makeshift stage in the woods.

4 SCOTT: The Scala, April 18th: A celebration of the life of Scott Piering (1946 - 2000) Pulp, Stereophonics, Placebo, Badly Drawn Boy, Embrace, Teenage Fan Club and Cerys Matthews are just some of the  names confirmed for one of the most unique and poignant gigs of 2002. As different as they are musically (that's a polite way of putting it)  these artists share one thing in common - their TV and radio promotions were handled by Appearing, the company set up by the late Scott Piering, who died of cancer in 2000. So, on April 18th the Scala (on Pentonville Road, Kings Cross, London) will play host to a very special evening of live music and DJ sets. Unfortunately there is a limited capacity at the Scala so safe to say this is a very hot ticket indeed, indeed it's sold out as I write this. Argh! Oh well, I'll tell you about it afterwards on the live pages.

Marianne Faithfull @ The Barbican, London Jarvis, Steve and Mark were amongst several special guests accompanying Marianne Faithfull at The Barbican on March 10th.  They did Sliding Through Life on Charm plus a couple of other songs.
