NEWS

You may remember that back in November 02 we revealed Jarvis' first post Pulp outing, Relaxed Muscle, a collaboration between Jarvis, Richard Hawley and some Fat Truckers (scroll down for original news item). Apparently the single, which was limited to 500 copies, sold so well it was repressed this year and has been accompanied by a concert at top east London venue, Bethnel Green Miners Welfare. For more details on the release check the discography page and fan Darren's dedicated site. (22/6/03)

RELAXED UPDATE: Due out on October 27th, the first Relaxed Muscle album, 'A Heavy Night in with...' is a twelve track glow in the dark CD (the glow in the dark ones are probably limited - not sure). The track listing is: The Heavy / Let it Ride / Beastmaster / Billy Jack / Rod of Iron / Tuff it Out / Sexualized / Muscle Music / B-Real / Previous / Battered / Mary.

Truth and Beauty: The Story of Pulp, by Mark Sturdy.

Seven years in the making, Mark Sturdy's book is far and away the most authoritative and well researched Pulp biography you can buy. Weighing in at a hefty 500 pages it delves deep into the early history of the group as well as more recent territory, and takes the reader right up to the present day; it contains stacks of little known facts dug up by Mark during his in depth interviews with ex-members you never knew existed, as well as contributions by Nick Banks and Russell Senior, together with several unseen early photos (including a rather worrying topless one of Russell). This is a really great biography and a must-have for any Pulp fan. Check out Mark's site for updates here and read an interview with the author.

Pulp Special Marianne Faithfull presented a 'The Story of Pulp', produced by Bob Geldof's Ten Alps company. Most of the group were interviewed for the show, which described the history of the group in as much detail as is possible in an hour, and which went out on Radio 2 on Saturday the 31st May at 9pm. You can still hear the documentary, including Faithfull's incredibly wooden delivery, by clicking here.  (02/6/03)
Issue 39FAN CLUB NEWS The final issue of Pulp People, the fan club magazine, was sent out at the end of last year (19/12/02). It is edited by Nick Banks, who personally trawled through the Pulp People archive, digging out features on Dr. Pulp, a great article by Russell, Bridget Booth's piece on winning Jarvis' crushed Hillman Imp, Richard Banks' 'On the Road with Pulp', the This Is Hardcore album launch party extravaganza..... As well as these we've got, specially commissioned for this issue, an interview with Candida plus a personal contribution regarding the demise of the fan club, a piece from ex-president Mark, Pulp Person Paul Jackson's views on the last decade of Pulp life, the group's Top Trax, plus bits and pieces requested by fans and finally a piece by Richard Hawley, telling it like it is in his own unique style. It’s a celebration of the great stuff we’ve produced in the past as well as the definitive guide to why Pulp are taking a break. You can still own a copy if you send an A5 sae with 41p stamp / one IRC to Pulp People, PO Box 87, Sheffield S11 8WJ.

Jarvis in 'LIVE FOREVER'  film A world premiere from the producers of the Oscar and Emmy award-winning One Day In September, this is a celebration of an extraordinary time for popular culture. It traces the roots of a British music revival back to The Stone Roses at Spike Island and goes on to take in 'Blue Lines', 'Parklife', 'Definitely Maybe', 'A Different Class'... indeed, the entire soundtrack of the 90s for many, before a blizzard of cocaine and cynicism towards New Labour's co-opting of 'Cool Britannia' trappings burst the Britpop bubble. A remarkable range of contributors sees Peter Mandelson, Oswald Boeteng and Louise Wener vying for screen time with Oasis tribute band Wonderwall. The period's 'holy trinity' are represented, with Jarvis cringing when he hears 'Common People' described as 'the ultimate Britpop anthem'; Damon agonising as he relives the Blur Vs Oasis standoff; and Liam discussing his androgynous appeal. The film is due out in February 03. (2/12)

MP3 of unknown Pulp song on amazon Nick knows

Click the link to download 'Grandfather's Nursery', a song from a set of 99/00 demos which has mysteriously found itself on the site. Nick says: "This was a track written at the Monnow Valley sessions, when some writing was done for WLL. It began with a guitar 'refrain' from Richard Hawley and was developed into a song by the rest. It was demoed at Wessex Studios (incidentally the last ever recording session at this old studio where "Never Mind The Bollocks" and "London Calling " were recorded way back in the days of Ye Olde Punke)  along with most of WLL and other tracks. Its probably this version out there.

The End of Pulp? There's a lot of talk about an imminent Pulp split in the press at the moment, what with them leaving Island and all, and it's clear that there is a lot of confusion over what's really going on. To put you straight: Pulp aren't technically splitting up, but neither are they making any plans to return to the studio (other than for the new extra tracks on the Best Of, already recorded) for the foreseeable future. There are still several things planned for this year, with the Magna date (below), Steve and Jarvis DJing in Barcelona in October (see What's On), Jarvis at the Lee Hazlewood concert on 22 September (scroll down for more info)... still time to get that Pulp fix. That's all there is to know right now. I'll keep you updated as best I can here on pulponline. (5/9)

press release, 28.6.02Notes on the Press Release

Although it doesn't mention the Leeds leg of the Carling weekend, this is only because of the licensing problems, which are now resolved, and Pulp will be playing as planned; also, Budapest on the 3 August will still go ahead.

Regarding the Greatest Hits - remember it is by definition a 'hits' album, so really obscure & rare old songs will almost certainly not be included. However, we feel sure Pulp will have something up their sleeves to make it special, including one or two totally new songs and possibly some old video footage on the DVD. (5/8)

She's acePULP (not) IN THE USA The US tour dates, which have been touch and go for ages, are off...sorry. There are no plans now to visit anywhere in North and / or South America.

To make up for this though, we can finally confirm that WE LOVE LIFE will be released in the States on August 20th. The American version of the LP will include "Yesterday" and "Forever in my Dreams" as bonus tracks. You can order it from amazon and spun and there's a review in Village Voice here.(30/7)
